What You Should Know About Getting Personal Trainer Certification

By Tom Addison

If you enjoy working out and being fit, you may want to consider getting personal trainer certification. It's a great way to share the enthusiasm you feel for exercise and fitness. You get a real feeling of accomplishment watching your clients become the fit, active and healthy people they have always dreamed of becoming. A personal trainer course is the first step.

As a fitness coach, you could conduct boot camp training sessions which have become very popular. Many coaches enjoy working at their local gyms and are staff members there. There is always a demand for qualified fitness personnel.

It's important to get certified by an association that is respected and accredited. A good place to start is by asking the manager at your gym. They can tell you what certifying agency's graduates they will accept when they hire staff. They will probably give you a short list of five or so organizations that offer personal trainer certification.

Look up the websites for each certifying agency. Each one will have prerequisites for applicants for personal trainer certification. Find the one that accepts your current level of experience. Make sure you are not geographically excluded from any workshops you may be required to attend.

Your personal trainer course will arrive along with instructions for scheduling your exam. Start studying right away. There is a lot to learn before you enter the exam room. You will receive a lot of information about muscles, anatomy and the cardio-vascular system. Fitness coaches have a detailed knowledge of how the body reacts to exercise and how to help a client make progress.

Check online and find a CPR training course. It should be offered by the Heart Association or another organization accepted by your certifying agency. It will give you hands on practice and you will need to get re-certified every two years. This technique can save a client's life, and you have both a professional and ethical obligation to have the proper training.

When examination day arrives, come well rested with picture identification. If you have not already mailed in your CPR cert, bring it along. You've worked hard to get to this point. In a few weeks you will get your results.
