The most common metal used is copper as it is a good power conductor. Common uses of coiled cords include powering generators and automated equipment. If a lots of wires have been used to rig something, it can also come in handy. There are only two parts to electrical cable but they perform completely opposite functions. The inside of the cable is a conductor of electricity, it must allow electricity to travel through it, whereas the outside must not be charged. The outside part is called the insulation. It is usually comprised of plastic or rubber. Some cables have the ability to retract automatically. Wiring is classed according to the diameter or thickness.
