Teaching Appropriate Values Through The Use Of Short Bible Stories For Children

By Enid Hinton

There are lots of stories to be found in the Bible that will positively influence how we deal with life's issues. One very effective and exciting tool to assist in growing up kids is the use of short bible stories for children. These stories teach Biblical principles, morals and values that would not be possible to teach by any other method.

The Bible instructs us in Proverbs 7:1-3 that we are to keep the words of God and store up His commands within ourselves. It further admonishes us that in order to live, we should keep His commands, and follow his teachings lovingly; bind them to our fingers, and write them on the tablet of our hearts. It is by the process of continuously retelling of stories in the Bible and tales that teach Biblical morals and values to our kids that we can assist them to inscribe the Bible's truths on the tablets of their hearts.

There are many tales in the Bible which can be used to explain any subject by adapting them into short tales that would be suitable for kids. A starting point would be to find out which values, morals, and lessons that you may wish to impart. This would serve as a guide for you as you compose it to meet the learning capacity and knowledge level of the children.

For example, you may decide to teach the importance of reconciliation and forgiveness and find a story that can explain this. One very appropriate story for this lesion is that of the Prodigal Son. You would describe the situations he faced after leaving his father's house, the harsh conditions he endured and all the suffering that he went through. He had to put acknowledge his mistakes and ask his father to forgive him.

Another tale would be that of the Beatitudes. From the many moral lessons it contains, you could focus on 'the Blessed are the Pure of Heart'. Children are the readership here, and in attempting to imbue Biblical values we should utilize the ones that are easily understood by them. Kids can be instructed on the significance of possessing a heart that is pure. If sin is harboured in someone's heart, God's presence wouldn't be there, and their supplications would not be heard.

Further still, the value of patience can be taught through the use of these Biblical tales. A Biblical story that would best suit this instruction would be the story of Sarah. While teaching the value of patience, we would be showing children that God is never late, nor slow. Whenever we pray we must wait for His answer to come.

The value of obedience is a wonderful way of getting children to respect constituted authorities, whether at home, at school, or at church. This value can be taught through the use of the story of the fall of man in the Garden of Eden.

If Adam and Eve had been obedient to God's instructions and not eat the deadly fruit, they would still be living in the Garden of Eden. Because the disobeyed, however, they were cast out and cut off from the blessings that God had provided for them. The lesion to be learnt is that in order to receive God's blessing you need to be obedient to God's laws.
